Carbohydrates are found in foods such as breads, cereals, grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. There are three types of carbohydrates 1) simple carbohydrates 2) complex carbohydrates 3) dietary fibre. Sugar in carbohydrates is released quickly and therefore provides your cells with energy more rapidly than other food types. Carbohydrates are used for more than just energy, which is why a low carb diet is not always a good idea! Carbohydrates are used to protect your muscles, when your body needs energy it looks to find glucose from carbohydrates first, if no glucose is available then your body will start to pull energy from fatty tissue, the next move it to then take energy from your muscle (protein). Carbohydrates also provide nutrients for the friendly bacteria in your gut (from dietary fibre), assist in the absorption of calcium and it may help to lower cholesterol. Your cells use energy very carefully, if there is glucose that your body doesn't use its joins with other glucose cells and makes glycogen which gets stored in your muscles and liver. Your body can store about 1,800 calories of glycogen, if your diet provides more carbohydrates than you need your body well then convert that excess into fat! And we don't want that. Personally I tend to stay away from starchy carbohydrates such as potatoes, rice and pasta, I also only tend to eat carbohydrates in the form of grains after a work out to replace the glucose that my body has used. I am not saying I follow a low carb diet, I am just selection on what kind of carbs I eat and when I eat them.
