The Benefits of Green Tea

Let's start with me being honest - I HATE plain green tea. However thankfully manufactures have added nice flavorings to green tea to make it more palatable. My favorites are 'orange and lotus flower' and 'peach and cherry blossom'. So why do I drink a drink I don't particularly like? Quite simply.......for the health benefits. It has been known for sometime that green tea can aid in all aspects of health but more and more research is being done into the other health benefits of green tea.

Please note that the tea MUST be caffeinated  and I would advise not to drink it after 4:30, caffeine after this time can affect your sleep patterns.

  • The most common reason people take to drinking green tea is for its fat burning/weight loss properties. Green tea contains antioxidants that can help to speed up metabolism by helping the liver to function more efficiently. Also the polyphenol found in green tea works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories.'A recent U.S. study of overweight men found that, with no other changes to their diet or exercise regimes, drinking green tea three times a day burned up 200 extra calories a day. The green tea drinkers also found that their energy levels were greatly increased.'
  • Heart Disease. Scientists think, green tea works on the lining of blood vessels, helping know keep them relaxed and better able to withstand changes in blood pressure. It may also protect against the formation of clots, which are the primary cause of heart attacks.
  • Regulates glucose levels, green tea can reduce high insulin spikes that may occur after eating (especially meals high in carbohydrates and sugar) reducing the storage of fats.
  • The antioxidants in green tea have been known to kill cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells untouched. As well as killing cancer cells it can also help prevent the formation of new cancer cells within the body.
  • It can help lower the bad cholesterol and improve the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol.
  • It is said that green tea an help delay the deterioration caused by Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. There have been recent studies carried out on mice that shows how green tea prevented brain cells from dying and even restored some damaged cells.
  • Studies show that the chemical antioxidant catechin in tea can destroy harmful bacteria that can cause tooth decay and viruses that cause sore throats.
  • If drunk regularly there have been links to lowered blood pressure.
  • Tea catechins are strong antibacterial and antiviral agents which make them effective for treating everything from influenza to cancer. In some studies green tea has been shown to inhibit the spread of many diseases.
  • It is also said that green teas can help prevent wrinkles and the signs of aging. It has also been shown in both and humans that green tea applied to the skin can reduce the damage caused from the sun.
So instead of sipping on that coke that is full of sugar (7 Reasons to Ditch Sugar) go brew yourself a nice healthy green tea. I suggest a flavored tea to start with and do not brew it for long than 3 minutes or it will become bitter. Its advised that we sshould consume 2-3 cups of this green goodness a day to reap the benefits. Personally I drink 4-6 depending on what I am doing as I find it nice to drink and try to steer clear of coffee as I like it with sugar and milk. On occasions I will have it with coconut oil - but I will save that topic for another day.
